Mark your calendars for Biomass South 2008 Charting a Course for Biofuels, Biopower, and
Bioproducts on
Septmeber 22-23, 2008 in Raleigh, North Carolina. This conference will provide a
forum for regional collaboration, a snapshot of current opportunities in the
South, and an opportunity to influence the development of the Southern Bioenergy
Roadmap. To learn more about the conference and to sign-up for conference
updates here . Learn more about the Southern Bioenergy Roadmap here.
Increasing odor, air
and water quality concerns have created significant difficulties for
the viability and growth of the livestock industry in North Carolina.
Management of air emissions and nutrients are major issues facing
producers and the citizens in the state. However, effective mitigation
technologies such as anaerobic digesters and lagoon covers are
emerging. These technologies not only address many of the environmental
concerns surrounding manure management, but also create opportunities
for revenue from energy generation and carbon credits.
This free workshop, hosted by Environmental Credit Corporation (through
a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant), EPA Region 4, and AgSTAR, will
provide a broad overview of anaerobic digestion of swine manure and
other related issues. Workshop speakers include representatives from
North Carolina State University, North Carolina Department of
Environment and Natural Resources, and EPA, along with experts in
anaerobic digester technologies and financial incentives.
After the workshop, attendees will be transported to Lillington, NC to
view a covered manure lagoon. The Butler Farms project was financed by
Environmental Credit Corporation with a contribution from the U.S.
Department of Agriculture Conservation Innovation Grant. Employees of
Environmental Credit Corporation, including the Butler Farm project
manager, will be on site to answer questions during the tour.
For those unable to attend the workshop and tour on September 18th, the
tour will be repeated the morning of September 19th. More information can be found here.
TAPPI, the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, is presenting the 2008 International Bioenergy & Bioproducts Conference on August 27-29 in Portland, Oregon. Seeing the significant role and opportunity of the forest products industry--and pulp and paper mills
specifically-- in the development of cellulosic ethanol, the conference addresses both thermochemical and biochemical
pathways available to today's chemical and mechanical pulp mills that
can lead to fully integrated biorefinery capacity in the very near
future.
The program for this years IBBC event will explore the latest biorefinery technologies, developing markets
and the legal-legislative-investment sides of the bioenergy/bioproducts
equation. A critical issue underlying all sessions is the
immediate need to attract investment community involvement on an
on-going basis. To learn more and register visit the TAPPI and IBBC website here.
The Short Rotation Crops International Conference will "initiate and provide opportunities for scientific exchange and full integration of the science and application of producing both agricultural and forest crops for
biofuels, bioenergy, and bioproducts." This conference offers an international forum for
discussion and scientific exchange about methods for overcoming barriers to economically and sustainably producing large quantities of biofuels, bioenergy, and bioproducts. The abstract submission deadline is Friday, April 4, 2008.The two main topic areas include (A) biological and environmental and (B) economic and policy implications of sustainable biofuels, bioenergy, and bioproducts.
Mississippi State University is hosting the MSU Biofuels Conference on August 14-15, 2008. Presented by MSU's Department of Chemical Engineering, Industrial Outreach Service, and the Sustainable Energy Research Center, conference highlights include:
- Presentations by experts on feedstocks, processes and applications
- Lignocellulose, algae, biooil, biodiesel, renewable diesel, ethanol, and syngas
- Speakers include representatives from General Atomics, Department Of Energy, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Mississippi Technology Alliance, and 25 x 25
- Current research at MSU and other universities
The third annual Southeast Bioenergy Conference will focus on bringing dialog around bioenergy opportunities and challenges in the South. Experts will be on hand to deliver the latest information and answer your questions on the changing face of this market. Keynote speakers include: Ron Fagen, President and CEO, Fagen Inc.; Gale Buchanan, USDA's Under Secretary for Research, Education, & Economics; and Jose Luis Oliverio, Senior Technology and Development Vice President, Dedini Industrias de Base. Attendees will:
* Discover the energy contained in forest products and how you can add value to your bottom line
* Explore new and emerging technologies with companies on the cutting edge
* Learn the role of water and other environmental issues play in the development of bioenergy
* Acquire valuable insight to ably evaluate bioenergy project investment--expectations, market potentials and pitfalls
* Hear what aspects of crops grown for bioenergy are important for conversion to biofuels/bioenergy
* Examine the importance of a quality product, ample supply, and marketing
* Find ways to incorporate energy conservation and renewable energy production into your business, your community and your home
* Gain insight from our group of financial experts in the art of the deal
* See new and innovative tools that are making the business of bioenergy more efficient and effective.
* Uncover ways to "waste not; want not".
* Build invaluable contacts for your current or future project

The Florida Farm to Fuel Summit will help Florida take the next step in promoting the
production, distribution, and use of renewable fuels, particularly
ethanol. The event will feature speakers and panelists representing international,
national and state perspectives on issues of research, production and
distribution of biofuels. The summit agenda and registration can be accessed here.
The Nano Renewable Energy Summit is scheduled for July 20-22 in Denver, Colorado. The Summit is "a gathering of world-renowned experts at the intersection of renewable energy and nanotechnology, with a specific focus on the business, commercialization, and economic development potential of emerging technologies in the renewable energy and sustainability sectors." Hosted by the NanoBusiness Alliance, the Colorado Nanotechnology Alliance, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the early bird rate of $595 expiries on July 1.
Climate Information for Managing Risks: Partnerships & Solutions for Agriculture & Natural Resources is an international symposium focused on bringing together climate professionals and agriculture and natural resource managers to share knowledge, experiences, and ideas. This exchange of ideas will allow for agriculture and resource managers to more effectively prepare for and respond to climate change issues such as increased frequency and extremity of droughts, floods, hurricanes, etc. The symposium will take place at St. Pete Beach, Florida on June 10-13. Visit the conference website for further information.
Woody Biomass: Fueling the Future is a one-day workshop taking place in conjunction with the Mid-South Forestry Equipment Show. The workshop will consist of actual case studies to look at the technology first-hand. The workshop will address several aspects of utilizing woody biomass for the production of renewable energy including:
- a national overview on the current utilization of wood biomass
- using GIS and satellite imagery to locate and quantify woody biomass
- moving woody biomass out of the forest and converting it into forms for delivery to processing facilities
- using specialized equipment for harvesting forest residue
- converting woody biomass into chips for co-firing with coal at power plants
- using a mobile unit for producing energy using woody biomass
