Southern Bioenergy Conference - August 11-13, 2009

No one source of renewable energy -- biofuels, solar,or wind - is enough to break our reliance on fossil fuels. The 2009 Southeast Bioenergy Conference will focus on how each of these renewable energy technologies can work together to make change. Leading off the discussion will be Robert Zubrin, author of Energy Victory, who will set the tone for a convergence of our technologies. Co-keynoter Jack Boykin of Cello Energy, will provide an overview of his new biofuel process. The conference will be held at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center. Transition to a Bioeconomy: The Role of Extension - June 30 - July 1, 2009

The Role of Extension in Energy is the subject of the final conference in the Transition to a Bioeconomy series. The conference will be June 30-July 1 at the Doubletree Hotel, Little Rock, Arkansas. Targeted to Extension educators, this conference will provide timely, practical information extension staff can use in doing programming in their own state or locale. Each participant will receive a handbook of educational materials. The program features experts working in renewable energy, biofuels, energy efficiency and energy technologies. In addition to plenary sessions, six workshops are planned to allow participants to focus in on specific areas of interest. Workshop topics are: Risk Management for Energy, Investments, Making Energy Efficiency Choices, Energy Crop Agronomics, Forestry, Harvest, Storage and Logistics Extension and Other Delivery Methods.

FREEDM Center Annual Conference - May 18 - May 21, 2009

The first Annual Conference and Site Visit for the National Science Foundation (NSF) Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management (FREEDM) Systems Center will be held from Monday, May 18th to Thursday, May 21st at the FREEDM Systems Center's headquarters, located on the Centennial Campus of NC State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. The FREEDM Systems Center is one of the latest Gen-III Engineering Research Centers (ERC) established by the National Science Foundation in 2008. The core universities of the center are NC State University, Arizona State University, Florida A&M University, Florida State University, and Missouri University of Science and Technology. The role of agriculture and forestry in a carbon-reduced economy, community wind, sustainability and the development of woody biomass are the primary topics of discussion to be taken up when the National 25x'25 Alliance brings its 5th National Renewable Energy Summit back to Washington, DC March 31-April 2.

A day-long plenary session featuring some of the country's leading experts will deal with the opportunities and challenges for agriculture and forestry in an economy that will call for a reduction in carbon utilization and emissions. Discussions are expected on recommendations for how each sector can capitalize on efforts to reduce and capture greenhouse gas emissions. Early study by a 25x'25 carbon work group, a panel of nearly 50 experts, indicates that on balance the agriculture and forestry sectors have much to gain from addressing climate change and a new carbon economy, and the summit will provide an examination of a number of policy options to be explored this year by the incoming Obama administration and lawmakers as they address climate change and greenhouse gas emission reductions.
