On February 25th, the first commercial flight using a biofuels mixture as jet fuel took off from London Heathrow Airport and landed in Amsterdam. A joint effort between Boeing, Virgin Atlantic, and GE Aviation, this first flight used fuel from Imperium Renewables based in Seattle. The specially mixed fuel used oils from nuts from Brazil and coconuts from the Philippines. The mixture was 20 percent biofuel and 80 percent kerosene. Boeing stated that their continued interest in biofuels would be centered around second-generation biofuels made from biomass.
