In February 2008, the Western Governors' Association released a document titled: Transportation Fuels for the Future. The document identified six areas needed for development of alternative transportation fuels: Leadership, Environmental Stewardship, Financial and Economic Support, Infrastructure, Feedstocks, and Workforce Development. Additional recommendations are provided for the development for specific fuel types including fuel efficiency.

In addition to the report, bioenergy assessment teams were assembled to "examine the potential for future development and to create a comprehensive framework to assess environmental, technical and socioeconomic impacts associated with national, state and regional bioenergy and biomass management policies."

The US Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels and Advanced Vehicles Data Center has gone live with their new online alternative fuel station locator. Users can indicate the type of alternative fuel they are looking for (including B20 and E 85), enter a search area and view available service stations. The program can also identify fuel stations along a travel route that you provide. Other available data includes planned stations and payment type available at fueling stations. Hydrogen as an everyday, environmentally friendly fuel source may be closer than we think, according to Penn State researchers. "The energy focus is currently on ethanol as a fuel, but economical ethanol from cellulose is 10 years down the road," says Bruce E. Logan, the Kappe professor of environmental engineering. "First you need to break cellulose down to sugars and then bacteria can convert them to ethanol." Logan and Shaoan Cheng, research associate, suggest a method based on microbial fuel cells to convert cellulose and other biodegradable organic materials directly into hydrogen. Learn more here.
